Tax Information
According to the federal law, the New Jersey Lottery would withhold 24% from any prize over $5,000. A 30% federal rate would apply if a non-U.S. citizen wins a prize of $600 or more.
Similarly, state law requires that the New Jersey Lottery will withhold 5% from any prizes with an amount between $10,000 and $500,000. If the prize is higher than $500,000, the withholding rate would be 8%. The 8% withholding rate also applies to players who won prizes over $10,000 and did not provide a taxpayer identification or social security number.
